Check the cruise’s exact included visits before deciding; brochures often say “Luxor” without showing how many hours are spent at each site.
One night: a targeted extension
Choose one night if your ship already covers the Valley of the Kings and Karnak, and you mainly want a balloon flight, a restaurant evening or a calmer final night on land. Stay close to the activity you are adding. A West Bank apartment is particularly practical for a balloon or tomb-focused extension, while an East Bank hotel suits a short temple-and-station connection. Keep the plan simple and avoid booking a dawn flight immediately before a tight departure.
Two nights: the balanced choice
With two nights, arrive and settle in, spend the next morning on the West Bank, and use late afternoon for Luxor Temple or a private Nile sail. The second morning can hold Karnak, the balloon or a relaxed breakfast depending on what your cruise already included. Two nights also give you a buffer if a domestic flight, train or ship transfer changes. Three nights: the best experience
Three nights let you pair a sunrise balloon with the Valley of the Kings, visit Karnak and Luxor Temple on a separate day, and keep time for a pool, rooftop dinner, felucca or an additional archaeological site. You can start early, rest through the strongest heat and go out again later. Before the cruise or after?
Stay before the cruise if you want a buffer against international or domestic flight disruption and prefer to embark already rested. Travellers continuing to Cairo by air may find an East Bank airport connection convenient, while those prioritising the West Bank can stay near the tombs and use a pre-arranged airport transfer.
Avoid paying twice for the same sightseeing
Ask the cruise company for the named temples, tombs, entrance inclusions and approximate visit lengths. If West Bank touring is already comprehensive, spend your independent days on Dendera, a food experience, village life or slower time by the Nile. If the cruise includes only a panoramic coach stop, use the extension for a private guided visit. The best extra nights fill gaps; they should not simply repeat the same route.
